Kakiseni International Arts Festival (KIAF) is the annual arts festival held in Kuala Lumpur, organised by Kakiseni; an NGO dedicated in developing the Malaysian performing arts industry. This significant event, localised in PavilionKL shopping mall is the first ever festival of its kind that incorporates various international and local disciplines of arts, such as theatre, dance, music, visual arts, literature and poetry that bridge languages and multicultural creativity under one roof.
The event is usually held between the mid-years and stretches from five to ten days. The festival is a showcase of original to award-winning works from all around the world, consisting of avant garde to cultural expressions of artistic mediums. The festival caters to all walks of life and ages.
If you are looking to be teased, excited and cajoled to appreciate the arts, this event truly lives up to it name by bringing arts to the people. Kakiseni is supported by the National Department of Arts and Culture (JKKN) under the Ministry of Tourism and Information.
“Wanderlust of arts under one Pavilion”
Now in its second year, the Kakiseni International Arts Festival 2014, which brought more than 500 artists together in 2013, returns with “ARTS TO THE PEOPLE” featuring an array of local and international talent in downtown Pavilion KL with performing arts showcases, art exhibits, busking activities, spoken word and a plenitude of curated international workshops. The five (5) day festival is an expression of arts, heritage, culture and diversity of the imagination.
The festival features award winning International acts from around the world; such as Stuart Bowden (winner of The Directors Choice Award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2012) from Australia; Roberto White (winner of the International Puppet Fair of Lleida) from Argentina, dance duo Elías Aguirre & Álvaro Esteban (1st Prize winners of the International Competition of Choreography Burgos- New York) from Spain, TAMTAM Objektentheater from the Netherlands, Canadian acrobat Akron Nym, human sized puppet master Natacha Belova from Belgium and many more.
The highlights of the festival are the two stages that sit right in the heart of Pavilion; a black box theatrette and the Seni Stage. The black box which seats approximately 160 audiences sets the stage for local and international performances such as Take Off presented by the ASWARA Dance Company; Pearls for the Picking presented by Reka Arts Space; and a solo piece called Lembu by Boh Cameronian Arts Awards winner NAMRON.
The Seni stage will feature performances rooted to our cultural identity. This stage features Malaysia’s Orang Asli; Tarian Rakyat by the Fakulti of Dance Aswara, Chinese folk and opera and more. Busking, art exhibits, and a kid’s art zone will be available on the 16th of September out in the vicinity of the Mall. In addition to the talents of local musicians and drummers, other activities will be available throughout the festival for all to enjoy.
The festival performances are free and open to all walks of life and ages; truly bringing arts to the people.
